The Most Expensive Watch

The gold pocket watch, which featured 24 complications, was the result of a long-standing competition between two magnates of America's Gilded Age. New York financier Henry Graves Jr. and Ohio automobile engineer James Ward Packard vied with one another to own a timepiece with the greatest possible number of complications. (Complications are mechanical functions of the watch other than the hours, minutes and seconds.) Packard commissioned 13 complicated watches from Patek Philippe between 1900 and 1927. They included a perpetual calendar with phases and age of the moon, indication of sunrise and sunset, and a celestial chart depicting the constellations of stars in the sky over Packard's home in Ohio.

Not to be outdone, Henry Graves Jr. also commissioned a series of complicated watches from Patek Philippe, culminating in a timepiece that took three years to design and five years to produce. When completed in 1933, the watch had a different horological function for each hour of the day and included a chart of the nighttime sky over Graves' home in New York.

The Shenzhen Stock Exchange

This building is one of three stock exchanges in the People's Republic of China, but look at this thing! I'm pretty sure it's a Transformer in disguise. ShenzhenBuildingTron is just lying in wait for Godzilla to mosey on over from Japan, and then he'll spring into action with his flaming derivatives-analysis sword!

The Lima Stock Exchange

Justify Full
in Peru, also known as the Bolsa de Valores de Lima, is an interesting building. It's shape is a strange combination of ornate and block pattern design. Also of interest is the stoplight out front which appears to be halting traffic from driving through the front door. Hopefully it stays red for a while.

The Bombay Stock Exchange

is the oldest stock exchange in Asia. It also has more listed companies than any other stock exchange in the world with 4,800. The building is three tiers of madness ranging from small parking garage-style structure, to rotund dome shaped building, and then ending with a menacing and towering concave skyscraper.

The Mexican Stock Exchange,

located in a beautiful area of Mexico City, looks like a giant glass covered Nintendo Wii. And as if that weren't enough evidence to claim the #3 spot, they went and planted one huge palm tree between the two buildings. Perfect spot for a 3 o'clock siesta.

newyork stock exchange

For many years, more securities were exchanged on the New York Stock Exchange than any other trading floor in the world. This made the NYSE not only the busiest exchange in the world, but also the most prestigious. While the NYSE may no longer be leagues ahead of its rivals, the pictures of its chaotic trading floor will forever be the image of what happens every trading day on Wall Street

Beverly Wilshire, Los Angeles: Hotel review

The unbeatable location at the top of Rodeo Drive, the glamour and grandeur of the design, the lavish spa and, of course, the Pretty Woman connection. The hotel's Renaissance façade features in the movie – Julia Roberts strides into the hotel after her run-in with the snooty Rodeo shop assistants. We also like the way the hotel's history is entwined with that of the local community: the hotel has kept pace with Beverly Hills as it has grown from being a tiny suburb of Los Angeles to being one of the world's most glamorous places to shop.

Aluminium's unbeatable strength to weight ratio1 gives it many uses in the transport industry. Transport is all about moving things around and to do so a force is always required. As force = mass x acceleration (Newton's Second Law of Motion), less force is needed to move a lighter object to a certain acceleration than is needed to get a heavier object to the same acceleration. As aluminium is so lightweight this means that less energy needs to be used to move a vehicle made with aluminium than one made from a heavier metal, say steel. Although aluminium isn't the strongest of metals its alloys use other elements to pin dislocations in its structure to increase its strength. With trains, boats and cars aluminium is useful for this lightweight property (which gives fuel efficiency) but not essential, in planes however maintaining a relatively low weight is vital (in order to level the ground), and aluminium allows planes to have to this. In modern planes aluminium makes up 80% of their (unladen) weight, and a normal Boeing 747 contains about 75 000 kg of the metal. Its corrosion resistance is an advantage in transport (as well as packaging) as it makes painting planes unnecessary saving some hundreds of kilograms of further weight.
